Hjh Maimunah Restaurant, a family run business established in the 90’s, is a name that’s synonymous with delectable Nasi Padang in Singapore. It has won many hearts and has been featured on celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s television show, a winner of the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2016 and Asia One People’s Choice Award 2016.
As you step into the restaurant, the fragrant aroma of Nasi Padang consisting of steamed white rice typically served with a wide variety of rich in flavour dishes fills the air.
The restaurant uses premium ingredients, locally sourced sustainable seafood and many of their labour-intensive dishes take up to five hours to cook. Ayam Bakar (Sundanese Grilled Chicken) - The spice-enriched chicken is brilliantly char-grilled, juicy and aromatic. The sweetness from the kecap manis
(Indonesian sweet soy sauce), savoury from the marinade and the 'char' bits give the chicken another layer of intense flavour. The taste is certainly heavenly.
Ikan Bakar (Grilled Sea Bass) - The freshly caught fish is first marinated with a spicy paste, grilled over charcoal and immersed in kecap manis, lime, chilli and onions. There is just the right amount of crisp on the outside, while being juicy and fragrant on the inside.
My favourite dish is the Tahu Telur (Tofu Egg Salad). It’s best I’ve tried. This “tahu” tower of heaven is made with soft, hot beancurd covered with crispy and airy
egg batter. The top is drizzled with spicy kecap manis, crunchy peanuts, fresh julienne carrots and cucumber.
The Sup Ekor (Oxtail Soup) is earthy, meaty, warm and comforting with a bursting flavour from a myriad of local spices forming an integral part of the soup. When served hot, one mouthful packs so much more oomph compared to an English style oxtail stew. Aside from quintessential Malay dishes, there are also uncommon ones like Lemak Siput Sedut or Needle Nail Shellfish swimming in a spicy coconut gravy. This dish is superb and is often sold out by lunch time!
The food at Hjh Maimunah Restaurant is excellent and the prices are very affordable. A meal at this restaurant will indeed bring you back to the good old days
